Frequently Asked Questions
How old does my dog need to be?
Puppies as young as 12 weeks can attend Tracking classes. There is officially no maximum age for a dog to start taking classes, but we recommend consulting with your veterinarian to determine if your dog is physically fit enough to start agility classes no matter what age.
do we have to compete?
Definitely not. Classes are geared towards achieving goals and for most people that means going to shows and obtaining titles but this is not a requirement for any DogJoy student.
is this a kid friendly class?
We recommend children be at least 8 years old for Tracking training and approval of the trainer. Children need to be accompanied by an adult caregiver over the age of 18 years.
what if my dog has a physical impairment?
Please consult your veterinarian to determine if this is an appropriate activity for your dog first. Written notice from your veterinarian for any exclusions/inclusions needs to be provided before beginning classes. Blind and lame dogs are not allowed to participate in tracking classes.
How Fit do I need to be?
Tracking is one of the original AKC sports and is a super fulfilling way to spend time with your best canine pal. With that said, tracking takes place in fields, woods, pastures, mud, rain, snow, you name it. If you are not comfortable working outside where it could be rough conditions, then tracking may not be the sport for you. There are Urban tracking titles, but significant walking is still required and you must be able to traverse curbs and other urban/suburban obstacles during tracks. If you have doubts as to your fitness or ability, please consult your doctor/physician before signing up for this class.
What equipment will I need?
Well Fitting Harness (see instructor)
Standard length tracking line (33ft)
Loads of yummy and small training treats
Toy or motivation object
Articles (see instructor)
Tracking vest (recommended) or treat bag
Proper outdoor attire for handler
Crate for resting dog in between tracks
Where do you do tracking class?
Because tracking requires land and lots of it, we vary the location of our training to reflect this as well as give the dogs exposure to plenty of tracking areas. Check the class list online and see what location is listed for information on where specifically that class is being held at that time/date as we rotate locations for variety.
