Frequently Asked Questions
How old does my dog need to be?
Puppies as young as 12 weeks can attend the Sport Dog Foundations Class, but we recommend waiting until 6 months of age to start the Level 1 class, 12 months of age for Level 2, and 18 months of age for level 3 and 4. There is officially no maximum age for a dog to start taking classes, but we recommend consulting with your veterinarian to determine if your dog is physically fit enough to start agility classes no matter what age.
do we have to compete?
Definitely not. Classes are geared towards achieving goals and for most people that means going to shows and obtaining titles but this is not a requirement for any DogJoy student.
is this a kid friendly class?
Nosework is a good choice for children ages 8 and up. Instructor approval required. Children need to be accompanied by an adult caregiver over the age of 18 years.
what if my dog has a physical impairment?
Please consult your veterinarian to determine if this is an appropriate activity for your dog first. Written notice from your veterinarian for any exclusions/inclusions needs to be provided before beginning classes. Blind and lame dogs are not allowed to participate in agility classes.
what agility venues do you compete in?
We have experience with AKC, ASCA, NADAC, and UKC agility. While we understand the rules for TDAA, USDAA, and CPE, we only have so many hours in the day and elect to focus on AKC first and ASCA second at this time.
What are run throughs?
Run throughs are courses set up for each class where currently competing students or outside persons with approval can work the course without trainer instruction to obtain more practice or work on that week's handling concept.
