Frequently Asked Questions
How old does my dog need to be?
Puppies as young as 12 weeks can attend the Barn Hunt Class. We won't allow puppies to jump higher than is safe for them. There is officially no maximum age for a dog to start taking classes, but we recommend consulting with your veterinarian to determine if your dog is physically fit enough to start barn hunt classes no matter what age.
do we have to compete?
Definitely not. Classes are geared towards achieving goals and for most people that means going to shows and obtaining titles but this is not a requirement for any DogJoy student.
is this a kid friendly class?
Barn Hunt is a good choice for children ages 8 and up. Instructor approval required. Children need to be accompanied by an adult caregiver over the age of 18 years.
what if my dog has a physical impairment?
Please consult your veterinarian to determine if this is an appropriate activity for your dog first. Written notice from your veterinarian for any exclusions/inclusions needs to be provided before beginning classes. Blind and lame dogs are not allowed to participate in barn hunt classes.
what Barn Hunt venues do you compete in?
Barn Hunt is only officially offered through the Barn Hunt Association. Titles are recognized with UKC, AKC, and now the Canadian Kennel Club. We can help you with showing at BHA events and then submitting titles to the organization of your choice for recognition.
Barn Hunt Classes
Our Level 1-3 classes are offered in individual sessions. Up to 6 slots are offered per session. We take turns working the dogs in the ring to allow for a more realistic trial type atmosphere and allow for plenty of learning both in and out of the ring. A 4 to 12 foot leash, non corrective but non escapable collar/harness as well as plenty of yummy soft treats are required for this class.
Barn Hunt is a relatively new sport that is sweeping the nation. DogJoy started offering classes in 2014 and the sport really took off locally in 2015. We offer training, workshops, and trials at this time and are the only ones south of DFW that are offering trials. Come out and learn about this fun sport!
